Hacking Barcelona on a Budget

written by Clint Johnston
Hacking Barcelona on a Budget

Barcelona is located on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Spain and home to more than 1.5 million people. The mix of old and new makes this city what it is today. The city is full of outdoor markets, beaches, and plenty of history fills the neighborhoods of Barcelona. Staying under budget can be a challenge with so many sites, restaurants, bars, and amazing places to enjoy. However, with the right resources, you can see Barcelona on a budget and make the most of what this beautiful city has to offer.

Hit the City Beaches

There is no shortage of free or cheap things to do in Barcelona. Start your morning off at the beach and try to beat the crowds or cool off in the hot summer months with a quick afternoon dip. No matter your choice, don’t expect a relaxing seaside beach in the busy summer. However, this doesn’t mean you should miss Barcelona’s city beaches. Many locals escape to the nearby seaside towns for a little peace, but Barceloneta and Sant Sebastia beaches are popular among locals and visitors in the summer.

Explore the City on a Budget

Barceloneta and Sant Sebastia beaches are near the Old Fisherman’s quarter and a great place to explore after hitting the beach. Grab a bite to eat or a drink at one of the many cafes before moving on to another neighborhood in town. Make sure you hit the Old City during your time exploring the area. The Gothic quarter is a must-visit part of town. From the narrow streets to the quaint squares, it is full of charm and history. Wind your way through Barcelona’s history and get lost in the Old City at no cost to you.

Barcelona Museums on a Budget

Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya Barcelona, Spain

The National Museum of Art (MNAC), Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), and the Picasso Museum are all free on the first Sunday of every month. Moreover, many of the museums in the area are free every Sunday in the afternoon. The Museum of History of Barcelona is great for lovers of Roman ruins. Make your way to the MNAC for medieval and modernist art, and the Picasso Museum is home to much of Picasso’s early work. This is a great way to enjoy the arts without cost.

Hit the Markets

Get a feel for the local cuisine by exploring the markets. Head to La Boqueria. It is massive and crowded, but don’t let that scare you away. The food stalls will keep you curious as you try to make sense of all the sounds, sites, and smells around every corner. After you work up an appetite, you can splurge a little on an amazing dinner in the city.

Barcelona on a Budget

Barcelona can be an expensive city or a cheap one. It is really up to you and how you spend your time. Finding the right balance between free and spending a few extra Euros at the right time will make for the best Barcelona experience. Booking cheap hotels in Barcelona will keep costs down and keep your budget open for experiencing the city.
