Enjoy the Historical Charm of South Carolina

written by Clint Johnston
Enjoy the Historical Charm of South Carolina

Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina. Its historical charm dates back to 1670, the year it was founded. This quaint city offers attractions as old as America itself. The city was at the forefront of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. While it is a historical city for the United States, Charleston offers more than a history of military presence. The city blends Southern U.S. charm with cultures that have become a part of the city since its establishment centuries ago.

Historical Buildings

Historical buildings of Charleston are not hard to miss as you stroll through town. The College of Charleston dates back to 1770 and is one of the city’s most historic buildings. Next, stroll over to the Dock Street Theatre and enjoy a performance from Charleston’s oldest community theater group, the Footlight Players. Next, include Middleton Place on your tour of the city. Known as a national landmark, it is home to 65 acres of incredible gardens and scenery.

Museums of Charleston

The city is home to many wonderful museums that tell the story of the city. The must-visit museum mile is a concentration of cultural sites that include not only museums, but historical sites and landmarks as well. Top attractions include the Gibbes Museum of Art, which focuses strongly on the American South. Other stops include America’s first museum, The Charleston Museum, and the Old Slave Mart Museum.

Historic Forts of Charleston

The forts of Charleston played a large role in American history, starting with the Revolutionary War and continuing into the Civil War era. Fort Moultrie is the site of the first American victory over the British in 1776. Fort Sumter National Monument is an important site for the Civil War, and tourists can visit daily by ferry from the city.

Charleston Plantations

Visitors can explore the plantations of Charleston year-round. Start your tour by heading out on highway 61 into the Low Country where the scenic plantations are scattered through the outskirts of Charleston. Drayton Hall, which dates back to 1738, is the oldest preserved plantation home that is open to the public. The Charleston Tea Plantation is America’s only tea garden. Learn about the tea-making process and pick some up to take home with you. The Boone Hall Plantation will leave you in awe with the oak-lined drive into the property. There are plenty of other plantations to choose from in Charleston, so check the hours that each is open to the public before adding it to your itinerary.

Historical Charm

Charleston is one of America’s oldest cities, and it’s easy to discover the culture and history of this city during your visit. The Southern traditions will make you feel right at home, and there is no shortage of lodging, sites, and restaurants. The art scene, parks, golfing, and beaches will keep you entertained for days. You will leave this historic city wishing you had more time to explore all the wonderful sites it has to offer.
