US Airways is offering a 100% bonus on purchased miles through June 30, 2012. Buying miles is not always a good deal but if you are redeeming the miles for a high rewards ticket it can be worth your while so let’s take a look.
The cost to buy 50,000 miles is $1,750 + tax which is $1,881.25 total. That comes out to 1.8 cents per miles. Not bad if you are going after an international business class ticket.
Another reason you may want to buy miles (perhaps only 20,000) would be to top up your rewards account. 20,000 miles would net you 40,000 miles total for $700+ tax. Again not a bad deal if you need the miles.
Of course, buying the most amount of miles possible will bring down the cost per mile.
What do I recommend?
If you are simply looking to redeem miles for domestic travel you might be better off just buying the tickets.
If you do a lot of international traveling and like to travel in business class this is a solid opportunity. Nothing is free in the world of travel rewards but there are always ways to save some money.
