When is the best time to buy airline tickets? Every expert will give you a different answer and it seems as if there is no method to the airline madness. Most agree Tuesdays are the best day to book domestic fights in the US but the questions still remains, how many days out from departure?
A survey of more than a billion searches revealed the very best time we performed by Kayak. The queries averaged 100 million per month in 2011.
Where is the booking sweet spot? 21 days prior to departure.
According to Kayak, you will pay an average of $342 a ticket versus the $370 you would pay if booked 6 months out.
For international trips that sweet spot was 34 days prior to departure. The average ticket price was $977 versus $1,016 for travelers planning many months in advance.
This information is handy but really help us find the rock bottom prices. To find the best prices I still recommend setting up fare alerts on AirfareWatchdog or Kayak and monitoring the flights. That way you can find flights at their lowest while keeping in mind the average ticket price.
