Traveling is a very personal experience. Everyone has a different travel style and there is no wrong or right way to do it. Adventure travelers will not need the same recommendations as leisure travelers. Backpackers and cruise lovers will not agree on the best way to see the world. However, all travelers need to agree on one thing and that is to have travel insurance. A travel emergency or problem can affect all types of travelers and you should be prepared for anything.
How to Choose a Travel Insurance Plan
The first thing you need to do when choosing a travel insurance policy is determining which plan is right for you. Popular policies include annual (which is what I have), domestic, international, or rental car insurance. Each will offer you a different type of travel insurance based on the type of traveling you are doing. I travel internationally almost every month which is why a plan that covers me internationally all year round is right for me.
What Type of Coverage do you Need?
The cost of travel insurance policies will vary by state, age, duration, and cost of your trip but there are multiple tiers to choose from based on what you need. Each plan offers different benefits to fit our travel budget and needs.
If you take at least 5-8 trips per year I recommend buying an annual travel insurance plan. Buying travel insurance before every trip is one more thing to worry about and this way you can buy it once and forget about it. You will be covered for every trip all year long. Take a look at the coverage based on each tier to determine what you need.
What You Should Look for in Travel Insurance
You want your travel insurance to cover any unforeseen events while traveling. You can’t plan for dropping your camera in the sea and never plan on getting your gear stolen in a hostel. That is why you need to look for a great travel insurance company that will have your back.
Look for the following in a good plan:
- Coverage of personal injury
- Coverage in the countries you are traveling in
- Coverage for your electronics including laptops, cameras, and other expensive gear (not all travel insurance Loss or theft of valuables and documents
- Emergency medical assistance and transportation
