The 5 Best Things to Do on the Papagayo Peninsula

written by Clint Johnston
The 5 Best Things to Do on the Papagayo Peninsula

The Papagayo Peninsula of Costa Rica is a nature lovers paradise. Located in the northwest corner of Guanacaste, the Papagayo Peninsula is home to world-class resorts, amazing homes, and some of the most incredible coastal landscapes you’ll find anywhere in the world.  If you love the outdoors, adventures, and getting out on the water then the Papagayo Peninsula should be on your must-visit list. Here are the 5 best things to do on the Papagayo Peninsula in Costa Rica.

Things to Do on the Papagayo Peninsula

The Papagayo Explorers Club will help you organize activities during your stay on the peninsula. There is education for the kids and adventures for the entire family. With 1,400-acres and 11 miles of coastline there is more than enough eco-adventures to experience. The Papagayo Explorers Club will tailor your day or you can choose from countless activities including mountain biking, outrigger canoeing, chasing dolphins, freediving and cultural experiences. I didn’t have time to do it all but here are my 5 favorites adventures from the Papagayo Peninsula.

Water Biking Through the Mangroves

The mangroves of Papagayo are teeming with life and a great way to spend the day exploring the area. The mangroves can be accessed by boat or jet skis but the best way to experience them is on a water bike. These bikes are not only eco-friendly but they are easy and fun to ride.

Scenic Helicopter Tour and Heli-Biking

Heli-biking is essentially mountain biking but a lot more fun. A helicopter, with bikes attached to the sides, will fly you to the side of a volcano where you can ride downhill as fast as you can handle. Just remember you have to ride back up that hill in the end! There are e-bikes available for a little extra boost and if speed isn’t your thing you can take it slow. The view from the helicopter is worth this adventure alone.

Things to do in Papagayo

Tree Climbing in Papagayo

The Papagayo Peninsula is an outdoor adventurers paradise and climbing strangler trees makes for a fun afternoon. These trees have natural foot and hand holds for you to use as you safely attempt to reach the top. Expert guides equip you with a harness and helmet and offer varying degrees of difficulty for your climb.

Riding ATVs around Papagayo

ATVs are a fun way to explore the Papagayo Peninsula and perfect to combine with tree climbing. Take turns driving these off-road vehicles and ride through the forests before stopping for a break to scale a tree.

Catamaran Day Trip on the Water

After a few active days on land and in the air you might just want to relax. Hop on a catamaran and enjoy a morning or afternoon on the water. You might just spot some of the incredible marine life including dolphins and manta rays as you’re cruising around the bay.
